Solid Performance Stepper Driver for CNC Builds

I recently picked up the TB6600 stepper driver step Nema 17/23 driver 42/57/86 32 segments upgraded 4.0A 42VDC, hoping to upgrade the control system on my small CNC setup. Finding a reliable driver that can handle decent current without immediately overheating is always a bit of a chore, so I was eager to put this 4.0A capable unit through its paces, especially since it boasts 32 micro-steps for smoother motion.

Initial impressions are decent, although the delivery time can be lengthy; I saw a few other buyers mention waiting quite a while, which definitely needs improvement for US buyers. Once it was finally in hand and wired up, I tested it first with a smaller Nema 17 motor running at 0.5 amps, and it handled that effortlessly. However, when pushing that specific motor higher, I noticed some shaking and overheating when setting the current above 1 amp, even though theoretically, the motor should handle more—it seems motor compatibility or tuning is a factor here.


Despite that minor snag with one specific motor, the good news is that when paired with my larger Nema 23s, this product delivers solid working results up to its advertised 4A capacity, providing that much-needed torque for cutting aluminum.


It seems for those looking for good performance with appropriately matched steppers, this driver is exactly what it should be, as one user noted. The 32-segment upgrade really does contribute to much quieter and smoother operation than older 16-segment drivers I've used in the past. It’s great to have that peace of mind knowing the device is rated for higher current when you need it for demanding tasks.


If you are building or upgrading a machine that requires reliable current handling up to 4 amps and benefits from smooth micro-stepping, I’d certainly recommend considering this unit. Just be mindful of the potentially long waiting period, but if you aren't in a huge rush, the performance seems to match the specifications for most mid-range applications. This TB6600 stepper driver proves to be a capable workhorse for my machining needs.
